The motives of our heart are the true indications of our life and direction. Do you believe that? When we fill our hearts with the pleasures of this world, what room is there for the presence of God?

A Story

I am reminded by a story about a professor. (Though I will adapt it a little from the way I heard it.) A philosophy professor walked into class one day, and set an empty jar on the desk in the front of the room. He pulled from his bag several golf balls and filled up the jar to the top. He proceeded to ask the class, “Is the jar full?” All the students agreed that it was full. The professor then reached back into his bag, and pulled out a large bag of sand and poured it into the jar. Then he asked the classed again, “Is the jar full?” The students paused for a moment, then agreed that the jar was full. So the professor then took out a thermos of coffee from his bag and started pouring into it into the jar. This effectively filled every space that could have been in the jar. The professor began to talk about what each of the things in the jar meant. “The golf balls represent the important parts of your life; your family, your job, and your passions. The sand is all the small stuff that if it was lost your life would still be full because of all the important things in your life. And even with you life being full there is always time for a few cups of coffee with a friend in need.”

What Fills Your Life?

It is an interesting story. I shortened it a bit, and took some license on the rewrite, because the point is what matters in our life. Is your faith on of those golf balls? Or is it the sand? Or possibly the coffee? Your life is known by the things that you fill your life with. If your faith, and God are only a small portion of your life then who will see it. I am firm believer that if I am not projecting God in my daily life, then there is a problem. You cannot be a lukewarm Christian, or I should say you can be, but you do not want to be a lukewarm Christian.

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot? So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16 ESV)

Wow! That is about all I can say on that. Who would want to spit out of the mouth of God? When we come to know Christ, we aren’t taking a walk in the park. There are no casual strolls down the beach. The moment you accept Christ into your heart you thrust into the heat of the battle. You’re on the front lines of a warm for your heart, and it is not something that can be ignored or taken lightly. You cannot be in a war and stand on the sidelines. When we walk in the spirit, and are marked by the blood of Christ there should be a huge change in our motives and lives. Even as I look at my own life I wonder what new idols I have placed before Him, because each new idol only steals time and energy from the One that I need to be serving.

Just as you breathe, and thirst each day. You must breathe and thirst for the Living Water each day that flows from Him.

And like Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-15 ESV)
